Construction of South Sound 911’s new facility began in late-September 2019, and was ceremoniously completed on Oct. 25, 2021. The information on this page documents milestones and construction work-related bulletins.

- July 14, 2021 – South Sound 911 announced its public counter will officially open Tuesday, July 20!
- July 2021 – Construction is nearing completion! The first of South Sound 911’s staff are expected to begin moving into the new facility in mid-/late-July. The move will occur in phases beginning with administrative and records staff, followed by 911 and dispatch operations relocating in phases over the course of several weeks.
- April 28, 2021: Construction is 95% complete! Staff are expected to begin the phased move-in process sometime in June. In the meantime, landscaping is underway, furniture is on its way, and interior finishing touches are in-process.
- December 9, 2020: Construction is 74% complete, with most work occurring on the interior. Windows will be installed soon, and in January and February will see a lot of work in the communications center: cabling, raised floor, and dispatch console installation.
- August 20, 2020: Construction is officially 51.3% complete! Framing is nearly done and drywall work has begun. Exterior sheeting and masonry will be done this month with stucco work will beginning soon. Landscaping and work for walkways are scheduled in the coming months in preparation for hydro-seeding in November.
- May 2, 2020: There may be special Saturday work hours from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. for welding work. The crew will do their best to complete the work by the end of Friday, but it will depend on how early the steel arrives that day.
- April 2020: Concrete pours are scheduled for April 1-3, weather permitting. Crews are attempting to wrap up as much work as possible in the event we are not able to get concrete.
- March 2020: More concrete work expected on March 10, 19, 24, 26, and 31, beginning at 6 a.m. Actual work days are weather dependent.

- January 2020: A work hour variance was requested for Jan. 23, Jan. 28, and/or Jan. 30, for the final concrete pour for the building’s base and concrete cutting. Since the work is weather permitting, the variance is subject to change. Neighbors may notice work beginning around 5 a.m.
- December 2019: A work hour variance was requested for Dec. 23, weather permitting, to start the concrete pour for the building’s floors. Neighbors may notice contractor setup beginning around 5:30 a.m. with concrete work/pumping shortly thereafter. Saw cutting is expected to begin late-morning and continue through the remainder of the day and into the evening.
- Mid-November 2019: Forms were set for the building’s footings and 330 cubic yards of concrete has been poured!
- Sept. 19, 2019: The ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony was held.
Work Hours
Work hours will generally be 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., but times may vary slightly during the winter. Some Saturday work will occur throughout the project, as needed, but will be in accordance with Pierce County regulations.
As with all construction work, noise should be expected, but there will be no pilings (“pinging”). Perhaps the most annoying noise will be the back-up “beepers” on trucks and heavy equipment. This cannot be helped as it is a state requirement and carries large penalties if not used.
Areas around trailers and storage areas will be lighted, but neighbors should not have lights shined at their residences.
Traffic and Parking
All deliveries will enter at the SE corner of the site (Pacific Ave. and South 36th St.). Trucks will offload on-site, turnaround on-site, and exit the site at the same entry point. Worker parking will be on the west half of South 36th St. and elsewhere on-site. It is the intent of the construction company to keep vehicles off the surrounding residential streets as much as possible.
Security
The site will be securely fenced with 6-foot high construction fencing. Security cameras will also be installed.
Residents attending the Aug. 28, 2019 community meeting advised of a potential need for an on-site security presence. Should additional security be needed, Kassel & Associates, Inc. will work with South Sound 911 for a solution.
Additional security measures were implemented in fall 2020, including on-site security, and motion-sensing audible security cameras.
Debris & Materials
The site will be maintained for cleanliness on a regular basis. There will be large containers on-site to collect recyclables and construction waste. These containers will be transported off-site to a regulated refuse facility.
