Fire Services Deputy Director

James Duggan

 

James Duggan joined South Sound 911 in June 2019 after 36 years with the Tacoma Fire Department, including the last seven years as Fire Chief and a member of the City’s Executive Leadership Team.

During his career with Tacoma, he also served as Assistant Chief for Emergency Medical Services for over six years. His path included Medical Services Officer, Fire Boat Pilot, and Firefighter/Paramedic. He was a member of the steering committee for the Department’s successful accreditation effort and a faculty member for Tacoma’s paramedic training program.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from UW, Seattle; a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from UPS; and was awarded a fellowship from the MIT graduate school, where his studies included logic, the philosophy of mathematics, and epistemology.

A Tacoma native, James is married to Melissa. They have three adult children and enjoy hiking and sailing.
